Builders & Beer

Episode 1 – Parker Deck & Basement

On Episode 1 of Builders & Beer, host Mark Blickenstaff, the General Manager of Moore Lumber and Hardware in Castle Rock, Colorado chats with Jake Fredrickson. Jake is the proud owner of Parker Deck & Basements. Although the company name has basements in the title, his focus is on decks.
Parker Deck was started in 2004 as a Father Son duo. Their shtick is they do one job at a time, start to finish, and “take the time to do it right”. Jake loves being a part of the deck building process and prides his company on being premier in the deck-building world.

In this episode, Mark and Jake review the process of deck building: from prepping & planning, to design, to construction and finish. The guys review purpose and need of the deck, materials used, including KDAT/treated lumber and traditional tropical hardwood, care of the underside of the deck, and railings. Jake also spends some time cautioning homeowners about pulling permits and ensuring design details, such as placement of hot tubs.

They highlight that decks are essentially more living space added to your home, so it’s a contractor’s job to make sure things are designed and done appropriately. Jake encourages if you are going with a company to do your homework. He jokes you are only as “limited as your checkbook”.
